Despite Mohammad Shami’s impressive five-wicket haul, Bangladesh managed to post a challenging total in the second Champions Trophy match against India on Thursday, February 20, in Dubai.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh chose to bat first, but things didn’t go according to plan early on.

The team suffered a massive blow right at the start. In the first over, Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a duck off Mohammad Shami’s delivery.

Just an over later, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto followed suit and was out for a duck as well, caught by Virat Kohli in the covers off Harshit Rana.

At just 2 runs, Bangladesh was already two wickets down.

Tanzid Tamim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz tried to stabilize the innings, but they couldn’t make it count.

Miraz was dismissed for just 5 runs by Shami, and soon after, Tamim, who had scored 25 off 25 balls, was caught by wicketkeeper Lokesh Rahul off Axar Patel.

With the team’s score at a fragile state, the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim was expected to take charge.

However, he was sent packing for a golden duck, caught by Rahul off the very first ball he faced.

Axar Patel took two wickets in one over, but narrowly missed a hat-trick when a similar delivery was edged by Jakir but  Rohit Sharma dropped the catch.

At 5 wickets down, Bangladesh was in deep trouble.

However, Tawhid Hridoy and Jakir Ali dug in and fought back.

The pair initially played cautiously but then began to find their rhythm, building a solid partnership.

Hridoy’s solid century and Jakir Ali’s fighting knock of 68 runs, which included four sixes, brought some much-needed stability to the innings.

Their stand ended at a total of 189 runs, with Jakir Ali departing after a well-made 68 from 114 balls. But Hridoy stood his ground till the last over before departing after scoring a 100 off 118 balls.

This partnership has given Bangladesh a fighting chance, setting a target of 229 runs for India.
